Boodown Rocks

The lane leading up from the minor road to the west of Langstone Cross that passes both Barracott and Boodown Farms above Manaton eventually breaks out upon the open moor well to the south of Easdon Tor. Tucked a little way up on the slope to the north of the Moorgate is a small overhanging outcrop that seems of little consequence until viewed at close quarters.

The rocks here are mostly hidden in gorse and buried under dense vegetation, but the main outcrop is a good size and the overhang impressive tall enough to accommodate a standing person. Other large rocks albeit flatter and less obtrusive are scattered nearby and the hillock here culminates in a few fissured boulders from which the nearby Easdon South Tor is visible to the north-west.

Set at some 200 metres below that fine tor this little pile is nonetheless worthy of recognition and as Boodown Farm is some 250 metres to the south east of the main rock that name seems appropriate. As with most of the tors and rocks dotted across this side of Easdon Down there are some splendid views to the south and west particularly towards Great Hound Tor and the twin granite bosses of Hay Tor Rocks.
