TORS OF DARTMOOR
a database of both lesser- & well-known rocks and outcrops
Cadworthy Wood TorSet below and some way to the south of the much better-known Oxen Tor in the depths of Cadworthy Wood the Ordnance Survey depict a large, elongated ridge of rock on the slope above the River Plym that is part involved in an old enclosure wall. An exploration of the area in April 2023 by Tors of Dartmoor team members Max Piper and Tim Jenkinson revealed a quite magnificent tor here of several piles spilling through the trees. The now dilapidated wall runs down and into the main substance of the tor on its west side that culminates in a tall cliff like rock face with a curious stack atop that resembles a witch's hat when seen from the east. The upper balanced rock looks very precarious from below but nonetheless forms a notable and quirky feature of this grand rockpile that is well worth seeking out. Above here splendidly fissured outcrops extend and add to the magical feel of this place that stands within the backdrop of the rushing river beneath. Sufficiently detached from the diminutive and humble twin outcrops on high, thereby warranting its own identity, this has to be one of West Dartmoor's finest tors set as it is in the vicinity of the breathtaking Dewerstone Rock masses further downstream. This entire hillside and woodland have an unparalleled ruggedness, but care must be taken when negotiating the streams of moss-covered boulders that are strewn across the lower slopes. Access to Cadworthy Wood is best and less taxing from the Dewerstone direction passing en route another incredible crag known locally as the Crow's Buttress.
