TORS OF DARTMOOR
a database of both lesser- & well-known rocks and outcrops
Sanduck Wood TorHigh on the slope to the west of the A382 between Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead and about two miles from the latter, is Sanduck Wood a lengthy and elongated strip of trees that is sandwiched between two other wooded areas of Higher Combe to the south and Huntingpark to the north. In recent years there has been extensive clearing across the hillside here making the slopes visible from the road for the first time in a generation, but with little sign of exposed rock or outcrops. All the woods on this side of the A382 are privately owned so permission to roam must be sought from the landowner. Lying roughly opposite Wray Cleave that is by far a much more rugged and tor strewn landscape Sanduck Wood is rather disappointing in comparison. Not only is the slope steep and walking problematic along ill-defined tracks it is not until very nearly reaching the northwest boundary with Huntingpark Wood that some decent granite is struck upon. Here near the top of the contour is an impressive but scruffy split pile that is interspersed with vegetation but on closer inspection is clearly a tor remnant. Whilst it is shrouded in trees the tor has some interesting rock faces that extend downhill in an easterly direction. There is no view from the summit though which is a level platform as it is almost completely obscured in all directions by branches the clearing having not extended to these upper parts. Care must be taken walking around and under the tor as the ground is unsound in places with crumbly soil and briars adding to the troublesome terrain.
