TORS OF DARTMOOR
a database of both lesser- & well-known rocks and outcrops
West ShaptorWest Shap Tor
This is a super rock pile in Shap Tor Woods to the west of the summit rock. "Shaptor Rock" is a very basic description of a huge tor, for these outcrops occupy much of the western side of this hill, known as Shaptor Down. For bagging purposes, we have given it the Grid Ref of SX 8076 8086 - the middle pile - but it is far more extensive. There is a logan style-rock on the lowest outcrop/boulder at SX 8070 8086 (not shown) first mentioned by Max Piper but it doesn't appear to rock, so is likely down to its appearance. In addition, the middle outcrop (SX 80769 80861) boasts two large rock basins, however they are obscured due to the vegetation. There are stunning views from both here and the upper pile (SX 80824 80895) with the likes of the mighty Cosdon Hill, to the north-west, visible.
