TORS OF DARTMOOR
a database of both lesser- & well-known rocks and outcrops
Westcott Wood TorHidden in the trees some 3 miles to the east of Moretonhampstead and not far to the south of the B3212 at Ducksmoor Cottage there is a small tor set in a nature reserve that is run by the Woodland Trust. A public footpath marked on OS maps passes westward through the wood from Westcott Farm and on the slope above to the left there is a ruined rockpile of three main sections most of which are embedded in the wooded floor, as mostly moss clad and dark and broken untidy rocks that are jutting from the hillside. The most appealing part of the tor is at the southern end where a still compact and rounded outcrop is set on the steep slope above the main path that runs through the trees. The hillside here is quite difficult to negotiate so care must be taken walking between the rocks and sometimes unstable ground that is hidden under vegetation. Thanks to Jake Parrish for information on this tor's location.
