TORS OF DARTMOOR
a database of both lesser- & well-known rocks and outcrops
Wotton RockLess than 1 kilometre to the west of Buckfastleigh lies the massive King's Wood, which was explored by the Tors of Dartmoor Team and Paul Rendell in January 2023. To everyone's surprise though, this steep-sided woodland yields no prominent outcrops except one, at the far east entrance, close to a private residence called Wotton. This outcrop is spotted, under hanging branches, just a few metres into the wood. It is situated to the south of a forestry track and an adjacent stream, rearing up from these on a very steep slope below another track. At close-quarters, the Rock is quite impressive and bereft of much vegetation. Another outlying outcrop, further upstream, can be seen at SX 72533 66303; this abuts to the water's edge like a small cliff draped in fern. To visit the main section (SX 72588 66359), it is advised that upon entering King's Wood you take a left-hand track which ascends the slope. This track is lined in parts by non-granite bedrock which can be slippery. At a track fork, you will need to turn right off both tracks and carefully drop down the hillside onto the indistinct summit. Alternatively, the Rock can be admired from across the stream on the level track. Wotton Rock is a well-hidden rockpile, one whose surroundings somewhat undermine its stature. King's Wood is entirely private land with access only possible by obtaining a permit from Fountains Forestry who manage the land for timber.
